- No friends in her lunch period.
- No friends in her math class.
- Homework given on the first day of school.
- An annoying boy sitting at her table.
- A broken violin string and a teacher who would not "take questions" and therefore would not help her.
This is what reduced her mother to tears:
- The Republican National Convention
- Fears that the Republicans will win in November.
- Another ice sheet, this one the size of Manhattan, breaking off in the arctic.
- Kids getting hit by a car on the way to their first day of school.
On the other hand, the middle schooler made new friends at lunch, a girl introduced herself and asked to sit next to her in math, she successfully dissed the annoying boy to the admiration of her table mates, and her violin got new strings, while I figure hope will win out over hate, and with the Dems in charge we'll reduce global warming, and the kids were not too badly hurt and will be able to attend their school today.
Let's see what Day 2 of back-to-school brings.

A hard introduction to the school year, here, too. A father of two boys at our local middle school a few blocks away was killed when hit by a woman high on prescription drugs in a BMW SUV. He had just helped his autistic son into the car and was getting into the driver's seat. And the local dramas seem overshadowed by the national drama -- RNC would be a good sitcom or reality show if there weren't so many horrible ramifications for beings all over the globe. I keep telling myself that my mental health shouldn't be so affected by the possibility of another Republican adminstration -- with all that says about the values of this country -- but that's a hard sale for me and others, judging by the water cooler and street corner conversations around these parts (an Obama enclave). So what do we do beyond donations, nudging the few undecideds in range... How do we reach the folk in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania. Will Oregon give the nod to Obama? Even the democrats are getting me down -- what's with the new acquiesence to drilling off the coast. Time for a piano and knitting break -- what a coward I am! SD
It always boggles my mind when people go for politicians and points of view that are an anathma to me. How can they be so blind, I think to myself. It's one of life's little mysteries that has incredibly dangerous ramifications. Of course, those RNC folks feel the same about Obama as we do about McCain; heck, people in my family feel that way. I think with politics, it just comes down to people's basic attitude about life, whether they're hopeful or fearful. Some people only feel safe when they're expecting and then preparing for disaster. Any talk of hope or bettering the world is just seen as foolish naivete.
